Located near the Grand Palace the late 18th century City Pillar Shrine, Lak Muang was commissioned by King Rama I at the time of the founding of Bangkok as the capital of Siam on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River.
This was part of a self planned walking tour that included viewing : The Golden Mount, Wat Saket, King Prajadhipok Museum, Mahakan Fort, Loha Prasart, The Democracy Monument, City Hall, The Giant Swing, The Ministry of Defence, City Pillar Shrine. |

Open to the public, free of charge, between 05.30 and 19.30 daily. With the main entrance on Lakmuang Road, off Rajdamnoen Nai Road.

We visited the City Pillar Shrine, Lak Muang in November 2007 and saw that the temple 's walled compound also contains a merit making area, neat gardens with topiary, large lotus jars with fish, souvenir
shop and classical Thai theatre workshop.
The City Pillar Shrine, Lak Muang is a particularly good place for Buddhist [and some Hindu] Bangkokians to pray for fertility and is visited by childless women and couples, making offerings of
flowers, fruit, incense and oils to the Lak Muang, others may make offerings for success in other business or personal matters in a special covered , 'merit making' area next to the main
temple.
