The central main tower of the Bayon is said to have once sheltered a Buddha seated on the naga. A Buddha image was discovered in a well under the main tower, transported for worship and display at Vihear Prampil Loveng in 1935.

The Angkor Thom, Bayon, is a temple that developed over a great many years and there were obvious alterations to the design as building progressed and even after completion alterations were made, making the Bayon monument one of the most extraordinary buildings within the Angkor Archaeological Heritage Site Park.
galleries which are in turn surrounded with towers supporting the iconic faces of Mahayanic gods, seen looking out to the four cardinal points. Modern Khmer call them "Prohm Bayon", with the name "Prohm" (Brahma) remaining as a vestige of Cambodia's Brahmanic past. The outer galleries on all four sides are conected with the inner ones through passages on each of the four compass points. In all there are seventeen towers of the Bayon. 
We visited the Bayon in November 2007 and thought the Bayon was also remarkable for the many bas-reliefs, particularly those on the walls of the outer galleries, many depicting actual Khmer historical events.Items annotated (TAT) |
