Appropriate clothing is required to be worn by visitors. The authorities ruling on proper attire is - long trousers, skirts and shoes. No shorts, mini skirts or sandals.

After the fall of Ayutthaya and law and order was restored in Siam the king lived across on the west side of the Chao Phraya River at Thornburi. When King Rama I ascended to the throne of Siam he moved the centre of his administration to the east bank of the river and construction of the Grand Palace was started - Building fortifications to house the temples, ministeries, residences and monasteries. This palace quickly became known as the Grand Palace and the foundation of Bangkok as the capital followed. There is an actual Royal (Guest) Residence within the compound but this is gated off and guarded by real guards.
