Wat Samphao, Wat Sam Phao, Chiang Mai City

Wat Samphao, Wat Sam Phao, Chiang Mai CityWat Samphao or Wat Sam Phao was built during the Mang Rai dynasty between 1260 and the late 1570s. The name is derived from the name for a Chinese trading ship or junk, a gold model is said to be incarcerated in Wat Samphao's Stupa positioned at the rear of the Viharn hall.

Worthy of note are the elaborate Lanna style decorations on the gable's of the Wat Sam Phao main Viharn and inside this temple are a quartet of 4 golden Buddha images - Wat Samphao, Wat Sam Phao, Chiang Mai Citygolden Buddha images, positioned under a painting of the sacred Bodhi Tree on an altar behind a saffron coloured curtains. We visited Wat Sam Phao during December 2007, and found a quiet atmosphere prevailed over the Viharn. Without a ceiling, its plain tiled roof underside can be seen supported by bare but finished rafters supported by heavy round wooden pillars in traditional Thai architectural style. In our opinion an interesting temple worth a visit.
