Buddha: " Whenever you see things, just see. Whenever you listen, just listen. Whenever you know, just know."Drum Tower, Bangkok, ThailandDrum Tower, BangkokWe saw this drum tower in October 2007 opposite the Grand Palace in Bangkok. King Buddha Yodfa - Rama I had a drum tower built on the present drum tower site in about 1782. The replica that stands on the site now was built as part of the commemorations of Bangkok's bicentenary during the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej - Rama IX in 1982. The architectural style is that of the Ayutthaya period. A three storied red roofed drum tower is a replica of a drum tower that stood in that ancient city. The tower houses three drums, one on each floor and each makes a different sound. The drum on the first floor is called Yam 'Phra Surasri' and when sounded signals sunset or dusk and sun rise or dawn. The second drum is called 'Akki Phinat' and is a fire alarm signal. The last drum is called 'Phi Khat Phari' and is sounded when the city is under attack from invaders. During the reign of King Nangkalo - Rama III the tower rooftop was changed to reflect the Chinese style of design that he liked. King Mongkut - Rama IV had it changed back to the original Mondop style. King Rama V had the drum tower dismantled and moved to Chao Chet Park, which we were unable to locate.
