Rayong province

Rayong province is in the coastal eastern area of Thailand about 220 km from Bangkok by road. The province is slowly developing as a tourist destination. The main attraction for tourists appears to be the fine, sandy beaches and clear seas with coral formations.

Even though Rayong appears in a few travel brochures, Rayong town is an old market town which hasn't changed much over the last few years. Nightlife here is pretty low key with a few bars but not much else, most tourists spend time in the hotel resort complexes. The shopping is a bit limited too. The main industry in the area is fishing which can be found in Ban Phe.

Beaches: There are beautiful beaches at Mae Phim (Cape), Mae Ramphueng, Samet Island and Suan Son (Pine Park).

Other attractions in Rayong province are few:

Ban Kon Ao is an area that has recently been granted National Park status.

Khao Chamao National Park, An area of outstanding beauty with a waterfall that has 8 leaps.

Khao Wong Caves, are a series od about 60 inter-connecting caves varying from very large to quite small.

Ko Man Islands. The island group is home to a project to preserve the sea turtle population of the area.

Samet Island. A popular tourist spot.

Sopha Botanical Gardens is the home of three traditional Thai houses that are over a century old.

Wang Kaeo Park is a landscaped hillside park with fantastic views over the sea.

Wat Pa Pradu Temple has a Giant Buddha.

Rayong province has connections with the Thai poet Sunthorn Phu (1786-1855). In 1986 Sunthorn Phu was recognised by UNESCO as a giant in Thai literature and declared a UNESCO Classic Poet of the World with their official title. There is a statue of Sunthon Phu in the Klaeng Amphon (district) of Rayon.
