Don't be too upset if you can't get a deal in one hotel there are plenty of other cheap hotels in Thailand! Bangkok and the resort areas like Koh Samui are obviously going to be more expensive than anywhere else - but there is always going to be somewhere that will suit every pocket if not quite the western standard you are used to.

We spoke to a German guy married to a Thai - They were living at the same hotel in a double room without balcony with fan, no fridge - They were paying 2,000 baht per month!

Mai: We found very clean and tidy - reasonably priced 2 star guest
house / hotel - room only basis with balcony, air conditioning, fridge,
en suite WC/shower/wet room with h&c water. The listed price is 400
baht per night per double room / two sharing. 
We asked what the by month rate would be and were quoted 5,000 baht
per month - payable in advance.
