Thailand - Koh Samui - Elephant
Trekking
The
only Elephant trek area we saw on Koh Samui was at the Namuang Falls
(No 2) in the south central region of the island. The elephant trek
took you into the Namuang Safari Park right by the Namuang waterfalls.
The elephants appeared to be well looked after and after their trek
were rested and fed.
There is free access to the fenced area where the elephants rest, for
tourists to feed the elephants with locally purchased bananas, peanuts
and sugar cane.
The
elephant on the right is catching peanuts. - We had some other fruits
etc in the car and gave one elephant a whole coconut that we had been
given earlier in the day to drink the coconut milk from. The elephant
had obviously been given one before - he placed the coconut carefully
in his mouth between his molars and cracked the shell, took the still
whole coconut out of his mouth and rolled it round the floor under
one of his front feet, breaking the shell in to a few pieces. The elephant
then proceeded to eat the pieces of coconut - shell and all, much like
we would eat a packet of potato crisps! (I wouldn't like to be there
when that came out the other end!)
